Summit News May 2016

Summit Learning Charter students and parents…. We are in the final sprint to summer!  Hooray!!!!

Some folks reading this may be wondering about summer school opportunities available with our charter.  There is now updated information on our website, SUMMER SCHOOL INFO.  For the past few years, we have offered summer school for free to our students.  It is a simple service to you, and I am happy to do it.  Summer school is offered this year for grades 8-12 only and if you register, than you can use your school laptop throughout the summer.  We will limit student access to curriculum to just 1 course at a time and your daily/weekly progress must be maintained.

Graduation is coming!  If you know someone who is graduating with Summit this June, give them a high five.  We are psyched about this year’s graduating class!  Nearly 150 students will complete school with us this year, our largest graduating class by far.  It is a true honor to work in this school with my colleagues and shape this educational platform that is helping so many young Oregonians get ahead in life.  Represented in that 150 student number are 11th graders finishing early, 12th graders finishing late, students earning a GED, and students also earning college credits with our Early College.  Summit accommodates all those learning paths with pride!

If you live local to our campus in Eagle Creek and are not attending our campus on Wednesday and Thursday, please make some changes and get here!  Study hall, PE, enrichment, tutoring… plus on May 11th we will have LIZARDS.  Seriously!  We will have LIZARDS at Eagle Creek.  Just for fun, Summit Learning Charter has invited local school entertainer, to come and freak us out!  But that is not all, June 1st… FIELD DAY.  My favorite day of the year!  Make sure to come and play! We will have snacks and treats, games and prizes, awards, a bouncy house and sun specially imported from Florida!

Finally, be on the lookout for an email from Summit coming soon.  We have reserved a picnic area at OAKS Park on Friday, June 10th,(7805 SE Oaks Park Way, Portland, OR 97202) for the last day of the year celebration.  Please come, we are paying!  Just return your laptop to us and let us wish you a great summer!  That email will have an ESSENTIAL sign up form so that we can prepay tix!

There are still 7 weeks left of school.  Learning Coaches, please don’t let your student get lazy… the final steps of a goal are often the most difficult.  Keep talking with your learner and pushing them forward.    Support them with regular check-in conversations about progress, ask them to give you a tour of their curriculum and show you their progress meter. If you have any concerns, give your Summit advisor a call!
